How work—and a landmark chapel—created a blueprint for the romance and marriage of Jesi Ling and Angelyn Hizon

It was orientation day at JSLA Architects’ office in San Juan when the paths of Jesi Alec M. Ling, seasoned senior architect, and Angelyn C. Hizon, a fresh architecture graduate, first crossed. They bonded as colleagues, with Jesi taking Angelyn under his wing to guide her through her inaugural project—the transformation of Aseana Church in Parañaque into the now-renowned St. John Paul II Chapel.

Their paths diverged temporarily when Jesi pursued his master’s degree at Pratt Institute in New York for 18 months and Angelyn honed her skill at JSLA Architects. Upon Jesi’s return, they solidified their relationship, and in 2023, he proposed to Angelyn in front of the very chapel they had poured their hearts into building.

Thus, it was a perfectly designed affair when Jesi and Angelyn were married last March 24, 2024 at the St. John Paul II Chapel, which was beautifully decked out in green foliage and white flowers by Drew Menor. Angelyn is the daughter of Angelo O. Hizon III and Jocelyn C. Hizon, while Jesi is the son of Jose Siao Ling and Ana Mangalino Ling.

St. John Paul II Chapel

Angelyn wore a romantic lace Rosa Clara gown detailed with pointed arches that resembled the shape of the St. John Paul II Chapel. For the reception at Conrad Manila, she changed into a simple and clean Studio Ceremonie gown with a full bias skirt, cinched with a beaded belt. Studio Ceremonie also made the gowns of the mothers of the bride and groom, the maid of honor, and the bridesmaids and secondary sponsors. Joan Quizon did the hair and makeup for the wedding.

Renowned men’s tailor R.M. Manlapat has been designing for the Ling family for a long time, starting with Architect Jose Siao Ling, the family patriarch. This time, Jesi wore a black tuxedo jacket and pants over a white dress shirt and a white bow tie for the wedding, followed by an all-black tuxedo ensemble for the reception.

Entourage

The wedding ceremony was officiated by Fr. Kevin Joshua Cosme, parish priest of St. John Paul II Chapel, with Fr. Glenn Paul M. Gomez, SVD and Rev. Fr. Jeremias O. Oblepias Jr.

Principal sponsors included Ramon and Teresita Ang, Hans and Carol Sy, Engr. Manuel and Clara Sy, Engr. Mariano and Marissa See Diet, and Ricky and Daisy Celis, with Tessie Sy Coson as a special guest.

For the reception, Drew Menor created an under-the-tree concept for a romantic ambiance, with a water fountain in the center aisle. Penk Ching made the wedding cake, while Jenny Lim of The Wedding and Events Company was coordinator.

Eri Neeman hosted the event, which was highlighted by JSLA Architects’ 3D model of the chapel, animated by Always in Motion. Benjie Tiongco did the prenuptial and wedding slideshow, with Notion in Motion as videographer. The couple first danced to Love is an Open Door from Disney’s Frozen.
