As Metro Manila and other capitals shift to general community quarantine (GCQ), most Filipinos are set to go back to work and spend most of their days outdoors. While the threat of COVID-19 remains, everyone needs to take extra precaution and do our part in protecting ourselves and our families.

Face masks will be a requirement as soon as you step into the outside world. But apart from these, personal protective equipment (PPE) are also ideal to prevent contact with COVID-19 droplets. This is why Filipino designers and brands are creating waterproof streetwear-inspired PPE, which, albeit non-medical grade, can serve as additional protection (they’re perfect for the upcoming rainy season, too!). Don’t forget: Extra caution and social distancing are still necessary.

Mark Bumgarner

After creating PPE for frontline workers, designer Mark Bumgarner excited fans with his recent collection named “The Armor Project.” The RTW line features hooded jackets and jogger pants made of water-repellant material and breathable layers. It also comes in prints and with woven fabric accents suitable for both men and women. All pieces have side piping and zipper details with the designer’s name and emblem.

Debbie Co

During the quarantine, designer Debbie Co was part of the initiative Fashion For Frontliners, which raised donations to create over 8,000 PPE for medical workers. For her RTW line, she’s designing protective outerwear, from trench coats to separates—all evocative of her signature feminine style. With colors ranging from neutrals to bold, neon hues, these pieces will surely change the way you see PPE.

Yong Davalos

Yong designer Yong Davalos injects her edgy aesthetic into her collection entitled “Newniform.” Budget-friendly, straightforward yet wearable, these overalls are perfect for any occasion and come with a matching face mask. Simply throw on a belt to cinch the waist.

Jerome Salaya Ang

Designer Jerome Salaya Ang is known for his eccentric style, and his protective fashion pieces are no different. With bold prints, sheer panels, and exaggerated collars, these haute couture nylon numbers are sure to be a standout. Who knew PPE could be such a fashion statement?

Michael Leyva

Michael Leyva’s interpretation of protective gear is far from the expected. His lightweight, water-resistant outerwear collection plays with lines and shapes through cinched waists and detailed sleeves. Who wouldn’t want to go out looking this chic?

Bayo

Home-grown fashion brand Bayo also came out with their “WEARe The New Basic” Collection of pieces with detachable hoods so you can wear and style them in different ways. All pieces come with two face masks per purchase. Hurry, because these are selling fast!
