From tequila to tresses: Why Agave is the best thing for your hair

The blue agave plant

What do people do when they’re stressed? They drink. Well, most people do.

Like us, our hair is also prone to stress brought by excessive damage from environmental factors and chemical processes. So, what do you do when your hair’s stressed out? Likewise, give it a drink.

We’ve all heard—and used—popular ingredients like argan oil, keratin, avocado oil, coconut oil, olive oil, and a whole lot more natural and chemical ingredients to save our tresses from reaching its deathbed, but there’s another ingredient, which you probably haven’t heard of, worth trying.

Agave is widely known as the main source of tequila, widely found in Mexico. Unknown to many, agave is an ancient beauty secret used for smoothening and restoration. Its amino sugars lock moisture inside the hair to restore its moisture balance and add strength, resiliency, and elasticity.

U.S.-based beauty company Agave Oil celebrates the power of this plant, bringing smoother and frizz-free hair all around the globe. Its founder Fernando Romero shares to Asian Dragon, “Agave is a very hydrating plant known for its healing properties and benefits. It’s the great cousin of the aloe vera. We mixed it with coconut, sunflower extract, vanilla, and green tea—all of those mixed together to really help hydrate the hair. In addition, you can also use it on your skin as well.

“It’s free of formaldehyde, which is basically plastic. When you burn plastic and you smell it, it can cause a lot of things including cancer. The difference of Agave Healing Oil from the others is that ours is a natural, organic product derived from plants, and plants come from the earth. For hairdressers, this is a safe product to use. They don’t have to wear masks or gloves. Everyone should understand the importance of using high quality products to prolong the longevity of their hair’s health and condition. It does not matter how well-dressed you are if your hair is not in perfect shape. It’s your hair that makes all the difference.”

Frizzy hair is a common beauty problem in a tropical country such as the Philippines. Due to humidity, hydrogen bonds form in between water molecules and proteins present in the hair, making it frizzy, wavier, and curlier than it actually is.

My hair is naturally thick and frizzy, the ultimate reason I always tie it up in a bun. I’ve tried it all—rebonding, relaxing, Brazilian blowout, keratin treatments—but nothing seem to give lasting or healthy-looking results.

Same as you, I asked, does Agave Healing Oil really work?

After attending its launch, I gave its Take-Home Smoothing Haircare Trio—shampoo, conditioner, and smoothing oil—a try. After 5 days of use, I can say it does make a noticeable difference. My hair is still far from straight, but it has visibly become more manageable.

The Agave Oil Treatment, in my opinion, is a life changer. It did reduce the daytime frizz, add shine, and smoothen out my locks. After application, you’ll notice that the product almost disappears from your hands and doesn’t leave a greasy feel unlike most oils. It also means that it is very lightweight and is easily absorbed by the skin.

The brand also offers in-salon services like the Agave Smoothing Treatment that promises straighter, healthier hair that will last up to 12 weeks (available in select salons soon).

There’s also the Agave Healing Iron with Vapor Infusion, a styling and treatment tool in one. What sets it apart from your usual flatiron is its oil cartridge that holds the brand’s conditioning Vapor Infusion. Once pressed, the iron releases vapor to condition the strands. You’d be surprised how smooth, straight, silky, and shiny the hair becomes after just one or two passes. The iron comes with a 4 oz. treatment upon purchase, which can also be bought separately.

Another remarkable product is the Agave Natural Bamboo Paddle Brush. It smoothens and detangles frizzy hair while adding shine to it—instantly! I honestly don’t invest in hair brushes but as they say, to see is to believe. And I was quickly converted.
