President Marcos leads Seatrade Cruise Asia 2024 welcome reception

In a showcase of Filipino culture and hospitality, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. welcomed over 350 international leaders and stakeholders from the  cruise  industry  at  the  landmark  Seatrade  Cruise  Asia  2024 Welcome Reception, held at The Cove, Okada Manila—the first event of its kind in the country.

Hosted by the Department of Tourism (DOT), this opening reception marked the start of Asia’s premier cruise conference, running from November 11 to 13, 2024.

In his remarks, President Marcos underscored the Philippines’ commitment to fostering a sustainable and inclusive future for cruise tourism. “The Philippines, in collaboration with our regional partners, is committed to playing a constructive role in this evolving industry. We are focused on strengthening infrastructure, forging meaningful partnerships, and ensuring that both the cruise industry and local communities will flourish,” he stated. The President highlighted ongoing efforts to enhance port facilities and protect the nation’s cultural and environmental assets, ensuring a unique experience for global travelers.

Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco expresses the nation’s pride in hosting Seatrade Cruise Asia 2024, highlighting its significance in positioning the Philippines as a premier cruise destination in Asia.

President Marcos also outlined initiatives aligned with the National Tourism Development Plan (NTDP) 2023–2028, spotlighting the Cruise Visa Waiver Program, which simplifies entry for international cruise passengers. “The recently launched Cruise Visa Waiver Program is just one example of how we are transforming our policies to welcome visitors with open arms and with open doors,” he noted.

“The Department of Tourism’s tagline is ‘Love the Philippines.’ I think for this evening and this week, permit me to add a few more words and say: The Cruise Industry Loves the Philippines!” declares Seatrade Cruise Group Portfolio Director Mary Bond.

With 125 cruise calls over 30 destinations in 2023, the Philippines has demonstrated its appeal to the global cruise market. The President shared that the country anticipates over 109 calls in 2024, with schedules already extending into 2027.  “As we continue to move forward with the same vision and determination that have brought us here today, I have no doubt that the Philippines will succeed in the global cruise tourism industry,” the President added.

Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco expressed the nation’s pride in hosting this landmark event, emphasizing its role in positioning the Philippines as a top cruise destination in Asia. “Through our President’s vision and leadership, we are advancing towards a new era of tourism, making our islands more accessible, and creating an economic climate attractive for tourism investments,” Secretary Frasco remarked. “We invite the world to experience the essence of who we are as Filipinos—people defined by vibrant traditions, joyful celebrations, and an unmatched warmth.”

The Welcome Reception hosted by the Department of Tourism (DOT) featured captivating performances, regional displays representing the country’s three major island groups and Filipino cuisine, providing guests with a glimpse of the nation’s rich heritage and tourism offerings.

Seatrade Cruise group portfolio director Mary Bond also expressed her appreciation for the warm reception extended by the Philippines, noting the unique hospitality and charm of the Filipino people. “This is my, and many of my team’s, first time in the Philippines, and I am sure like me, anyone who has not been here before has already been made to feel so very welcome…The Department of Tourism’s tagline is ‘Love the Philippines.’ I think for this evening and this week, permit me to add a few more words and say: The Cruise Industry Loves the Philippines!” Bond declared.

Seatrade Cruise Asia 2024, co-located with Seatrade Maritime Crew  Connect Global, will continue with strategic discussions and networking sessions, focusing on sustainable growth and regional collaboration in the cruise industry.
