Following the violence at a recent white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, former US President Barack Obama responded with a tweet, a quote from Nelson Mandela.

It read: “No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin or his background or his religion.”

Social media site Twitter confirmed that Obama’s tweet reached over 2.7 million likes and more than 1.5 million retweets, breaking world record on August 16.

The Charlottesville incident is another benchmark of the long-running dispute over racism, violence, and freedom of speech. The debacle resulted to several injured and one killed. The victim, Heather Heyer, 32, was killed after a car drove over into the crowd of anti-hate protesters.

Suspect James Fields Jr., a white supremacist, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder, among others.

President Donald Trump, on the other hand, tweeted: “We ALL must be united & condemn all that hate stands for. There is no place for this kind of violence in America. Let’s come together as one!” Trump’s tweet picked up over 190,000 likes.

Obama’s famous tweet, now at 4 million likes, overtook singer Ariana Grande’s post-Manchester terrorist attack message.
